Iano. Locality in the territory of Montaione in Tuscany

Iano is a village located in the southern part of the territory of Montaione and can be reached from San Vivaldo following the signs for Villamagna.
The hill around Iano are very ancient, because it is one of the three islands of Tuscany emerged in the Carboniferous period together with the Mount Serra on the Elba island. For this reason can be found in the surrounding many fossils and minerals. Following some findings dating from the fifth century, Iano was inhabited since the times of the Etruscans.
In medieval times, when it developed the art of glass, Iano and the woods of its surroundings were a reserve of wood used as fuel for the many kilns of Montaione and Gambassi.
Recently, Iano, was made famous for the extraction of Onyx and semi-precious stones and even today, in a laboratory Montaione artisan produce items in onyx and semi precious stones.
The village of Iano still presents the church dedicated to Sant’Andrea in Alliano and a restaurant, while some houses were converted into farm and apartments for holidays.
Around Iano worth a visit the Sanctuary of Pietrina where you can enjoy a breathtaking view that sweeps from Volterra to Pisa and from where, and when the days are particularly clear, you can see the sea.
