San Vivaldo is a village situated a few steps from the famous Holy Mount of San Vivaldo. The place had a remarkable development during the period of the glass because it is situated near a large wooded area that was providing fuel for the furnaces of the glass of Montaione. In early 1900s in San Vivaldo were two mills, two furnaces and a Tabaccaia. Today in San Vivaldo there is a restaurant and some of the old houses have been converted into apartments for vacation.
Santo Stefano is located 5 km from Montaione. As demonstrated by some archaeological finds the town was inhabited since the time of the Etruscans, while during the Middle Ages there was a walled castle.
Here, the landscape of Montaione, cultivated with vineyards and olive groves, gives way to rolling hills planted with grain gives an intense feeling of relaxation.
Iano is a village located in the southern part of the territory of Montaione and can be reached from San Vivaldo following the signs for Villamagna.
The hill around Iano are very ancient, because it is one of the three islands of Tuscany emerged in the Carboniferous period together with the Mount Serra on the Elba island. For this reason can be found in the surrounding many fossils and minerals. Following some findings dating from the fifth century, Iano was inhabited since the times of the Etruscans.
In medieval times, when it developed the art of glass, Iano and the woods of its surroundings were a reserve of wood used as fuel for the many kilns of Montaione and Gambassi.
Recently, Iano, was made famous for the extraction of Onyx and semi-precious stones and even today, in a laboratory Montaione artisan produce items in onyx and semi precious stones.
The village of Iano still presents the church dedicated to Sant’Andrea in Alliano and a restaurant, while some houses were converted into farm and apartments for holidays.
Around Iano worth a visit the Sanctuary of Pietrina where you can enjoy a breathtaking view that sweeps from Volterra to Pisa and from where, and when the days are particularly clear, you can see the sea.
Sughera is a small village whose origins date back to 1186 relating to a castle that the German Emperor Henry VI gave to the Bishop of Volterra Ildebrando Pannocchieschi.
The church of Sughera, dedicated to Saints Peter and Cerbone, was rebuilt on the ruins of an ancient church of 1528.
Today at Sughera there is a restaurant, a few farmhouses and apartments. Of particular interest is the landscape of a row of cypress trees whose photographs have appeared on many books and magazines to represent the typical landscape of Tuscany.
The village of Castelfalfi and its castle dates back to 754 following a settlement by Long bards, although some archaeological remains found in the vicinity show that the area was inhabited since the time of the Etruscans.
The village of Castelfalfi remained intact until today. You can still walk along the ancient streets, admire the castle and a wonderful view of the Tuscan countryside. Of particular interest, located at the centre of the village of Castelfalfi, is the romanesque Church of San Floriano, rebuilt in 1511.
